South Korea wants to join in PH telco industry

Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar recently announced that a South Korean firm may join in the telecommunications industry in the Philippines.

The South Korean agency is in partnership with Philippine Telegraph & Telephone Corp (PT&T).

This comes after the recent announcement that China is showing interest in being a giant player in the telco industry.

The information about South Korea joining in came from the Department of Information and Communications Technology acting Secretary Eliseo Rio Jr. who relayed the information to President Rodrigo Duterte during a cabinet meeting.

Andanar added that there are two parties interested to be the third player in the Philippine telecommunications industry. These are China Telcom, and the recently mentioned PT&T in partnership with a Korean telecom company.

It was President Duterte who invited China to invest in the Philippines’ telecom industry, when Duterte visited the country and had a chat with its administration.

According to the Duterte administration, China still has to comply with the country’s constitutional provisions regarding foreign investment and ownership. The constitution states that a foreign entity may only own 40 percent of the company.

Duterte has already ordered that agencies involved in the process of bringing in the third telco company to expedite the process in order for it to begin operations in the first quarter of 2018.

Even with Duterte inviting China, they say that they are still open to other players, just as long as China does not commit.

Talagang inaapura po iyan ng DICT para maging competitive po and ating telecoms industry,” said Andanar.

This new key player being brought in will force the already existing PLDT Inc and Globe Telecom Inc to step up their game and provide better services.

We can really see that even just the announcement itself ay nahikayat po iyong dalawang telco giants na ito na mag-invest ng pera para pagandahin pa iyong kanilang serbisyo, so, that in itself is already a victory for the Filipino people,” he said.
