Sereno won’t sign bank secrecy waiver

In a press conference in Manila on Tuesday, Atty. Josa Deinla, one of the Sereno’s spokespersons, said that the Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth (SALN) submitted by Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno to the Supreme Court already included a waiver permitting the Office of the Ombudsman and other bodies to scrutinize the Chief Justice’s assets.

That (waiver) is no longer necessary because the standard form of SALN authorizes the Ombudsman and other investigative bodies to conduct an examination,” Deinla said.

Deinla stood firm that the impeachment complaint against Sereno is a waste of time and energy for it has no basis in the Constitution to warrant a trial.

This is a waste of time, this is a waste or energy, this is a distraction,” she said.

The said complaint was filed by Lawyer Larry Gadon who accused Sereno of not declaring her real wealth in her SALN, including more than P30 million in legal fees she received from the government in the Piatco case.

The impeachment complaint filed by Gadon contains four grounds for impeachment including culpable violation of the Constitution, corruption, other high crimes, and betrayal of public trust. It also has alleged 27 acts constituting the offenses charged.

On the other hand, the House justice committee will still push through the impeachment complaint for they already found sufficient grounds to bring to court the top magistrate.

The complaint alleges sufficient ground for impeachment and thereafter we will now move to the next stage which is the determination of probable cause,” committee chair Reynaldo Umali said.
