Imelda Marcos admits to former Mayor Atienza 7,000 tons of gold belonging to PH

Despite being a member of the opposition, former Manila City Mayor Lito Atienza claims that President Ferdinand Marcos’ widow and Congresswoman Imelda Marcos had confided to him that she intends to return 7,000 tons of gold to the Philippines.

Narinig ko na yan directly from Congresswoman Imelda Marcos when I was mayor. Sabi niya, gusto ko ibalik ang gold dito, ibalik sa gobyerno yan para mabawi lahat ng utang natin,” said Atienza.

Soon after, Imelda’s daughter, Imee Marcos, told the Mayor not to believe what Imelda said.

Atienza was a staunch critic of Ferdinand and belonged to the Liberal Party (LP), and yet, when asked why Imelda would confide in him about wealth belonging to the country, the former Mayor can only surmise that Imelda sought to help the Philippine government facilitate the return of the gold.

This boosted claims that the Marcos family has acquired ill-gotten wealth during the years of Ferdinand’s rule. President Rodrigo Duterte himself had said that someone from the Marcos camp reported how the Marcos family intended to return some of their wealth to the Philippines.

Despite these reports, the Marcoses had always denied the allegations that they have amassed such illegal wealth over the years.

Atienza, instead, just hopes Duterte would broker the deal.

Wag na natin usisain dahil wala naman na pro-prosecute. Kunin na lang natin,” he said.

Kabayan Representative Harry Roque resigns to the same course when he said, “bagamat ninanais natin na magkaroon ng pananagutan doon sa mga nagnakaw sa ating bayan, ang katotohanan ay matapos ang tatlumpu’t isang taon ay mukhang mabibigo tayo na mapakulong ang kahit sino doon sa nangyaring kleptocracy noong nakaraang rehimen ng diktadura.
