Sen. Poe calls Sec. Aguirre a “troll”

Senator and Char of the Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media Grace Poe scolds and taunts Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre as a “troll” for supposedly exploiting and amplifying the spread of fake news.

The number and spread of fake news has alerted Poe after it was shown to threaten “public and private interest” by making people believe it is true.

Poe calls out Aguirre a “troll” for using fake news as a way of maligning “political opponents” such as linking Congress members to the Maute group based on twisted information proliferated by fake news online.

“I call on Secretary Aguirre to faithfully do his duty to serve public interest, and that requires siding with the truth,” Poe said in her statement on Aguirre’s actions.

She urged Congress to address the proliferation of fake news and implement measures to counter the dissemination and “penalize the perpetrators”.

Her full statement reads,

"As Chair of the Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media, I am alarmed by the proliferation of fake news on the internet both adversely affecting public and private interest.

What makes it worse is when the Justice Secretary himself willing exploits and amplifies such fake news like a troll without a modicum of effort to at least verify the same just to malign political opponents. He was at it again when he recklessly linked several of our colleagues in Congress to the Maute group, only to backtrack and offer excuses.

I call on Secretary Aguirre to faithfully do his duty to serve public interest, and that requires siding with the truth. Congress should look into these pernicious acts and hopefully come up with legislation to address this phenomenon and penalize perpetrators, referring to both authors of fake news as well as sites willingly hosting the same."
