WARNING: Cotton Swabs Are Not Safe To Be Used For Cleaning Ears!

The ears are an extremely sensitive and delicate part of the body. Many people are still using traditional methods such as using cotton swabs to clean their ears. However, this not the safest practice as The Telegraph reports around 7,000 people in England get hospitalized after injuring their ears caused by cotton swabs.

Why? The deeper you stick the cotton swabs into your ears, the more likely they are to cause damage and blockage. Cotton swabs aren’t that bad as a method to clean your ears, just refrain from inserting them too far that they hit the ear canal.

However the most dangerous method for cleaning the ears might just be ear-candling. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that this process is dangerous and that you can get injured through this method, such as burns, ear obstructions (due to wax from the candle entering the ear), and ear perforations.

So what are the better ways to clean the ears? There are actually a number of home remedies that are safer and easier.

1. Oils. A few drops of baby oil, mineral oil, or specifically formulated ear-cleansing oil are safe and effective to use for cleaning your ears. Just check if you’re allergic to the ingredients or not.

2. Detergents. Hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide are effective at cleaning wax in the ear canals.

3. Irrigation or syringing. You should ask your doctor to perform this technique for you. Using a saline solution was noted to be the most effective rinse for this method.

Just a gentle reminder, ears are designed to clean themselves. Moreover, some people, genetically, may never need to clean theirs. But it’s still safe to use the methods mentioned above.
