Surgeons Sew This Mans Hand Into His Belly. The Reason Behind This Will Surely Leave You Speechless!

Can you stomach what you’re going to read next?

Clever surgeons saved a man’s hand from amputation when they put it inside a pocket in his belly. A flap of protective skin covered the injured left hand buried in the abdomen, after the man was involved in a terrible work accident.

Carlos Mariotti, the 42-year old who lives in Orleans in the south of Brazil, was operating a manufacturing coil machine at a plastic factory when his hand was dragged into the heavy-duty equipment.

He wrenched his hand out of the machine, after repeated screams for help. His colleagues responded and tried to save the hand by tightly wrapping it in bandages.

He was brought to Santa Otilia Hospital wherein the doctors immediately performed a “salvaging” procedure to save the hand.

Orthopedic and traumatology doctor, Boris Brandao, who did the operation, said: “(Mr. Marriotti) suffered a de-gloving injury which left him with very little skin on the palm and back of his hand, exposing the bones and tendons inside.”

You got to hand it to the surgeons. They opened the abdomen, removed the skin, and placed the wounded hand inside the cavity to protect it. Dr. Brandao explained that the hand must remain inside the pocket for 42 days “to ensure it develops new tissue and tendon material which is capable to receiving a replanted skin graft.” Without this procedure, there would be a high risk of infection and the tissue and tendons would rot away, he added.

After the intensive operation, Mr. Mariotti could not believe it when the doctors said that they tucked his hand inside him. The heavily bandaged midriff kept his arm firmly in place, but he was advised to gently move his hand around so it won’t become stiff.

Periodic check-ups are necessary to monitor the treatment progress and healing process of the hand. Although Mr. Marriotti lost two fingers in the accident, he will still have a working hand but with impaired function. The pincer movement will allow him to hold a fork, grip a steering wheel, and dress himself. At least this is a better quality of life compared to having an amputated hand, he added.

He won’t be pulling out his damaged hand because doing so would result in losing his hand, according to his doctors. For now, he can go on singing Alanis Morissette’s Hand in My Pocket.
