There are 2 major types of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic. 

A ischemic stroke caused by the aforementioned blockage in the arteries leading to the brain while a hemorrhagic stroke is caused by reduced blood flow.

People who survive a stroke may experience permanent brain damage as well as numbness and/or malfunction in the other areas of the body.
