Former tennis champ Martina Navratilova and politicians react to Duterte’s rape joke

President Rodrigo Duterte has once again headlined news for his controversial joke about rape during his speech to soldiers in Iliigan City last May 26, 2017 (Friday).

Local and international personalities aired their views and sentiments regarding the President’s tirade.

Former international tennis champion Martina Navratilova called Duterte a “sick fuck” for his comments and even linked him to US President Donald Trump to add to her disgust.

In Martina’s twitter post, she said, “what a sick fuck this guy Duterte is. And trump supports him. Oh well...”

Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former US President Bill Clinton, also gave her two cents on the issue by labelling Duterte as a “murderous thug” for speaking about women and rape in such a manner.

While she may be a staunch Duterte supporter, National Youth Chairman Aiza Seguerra also shared her dismay over the recent statement of the President saying, “Presidente, tama na po ang rape jokes please.”

Senators Risa Hontiveros and Kiko Pangilinan emphasized that rape should not be undermined as a joke given the gravity of the issue especially for victims and survivors. More so, Duterte made the joke in the context of an ongoing Martial Law which is often recalled as the root of human rights violations.

Hontiveros said that “muli, Di katatawanan Ang rape. Krimen iyon. Paglabag iyon sa Bill of Rts na di suspendido sa ilalim ng Batas Militar. Di nakakatawa Ang rape”.

Pangilinan urged the President to apologize as he said that “Even as a joke it is unacceptable for anyone to joke about rape, more so coming from the commander in chief. He should apologize for the offensive remark."

On the end of the Malacañang Palace, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella clarified Duterte’s statements saying it was merely a show of “heightened bravado”.

"PRRD [Duterte] is decisively acting, speaking with heightened bravado, that law and order would be brought back in these areas of rebellion in the soonest time possible and that normalcy would likewise be restored with minimal loss of lives," Abella said.

“He gave his full support to the men and women in uniform, taking complete responsibility for their actions, even exaggeratedly describing crimes like taking a fourth wife,” he added.
